If you’ve only got a month to prepare for the IELTS exam, you’re not alone—and you’re not out of time.
Many of my students, over the past 14 years of IELTS coaching, have come to me saying, “I’ve only got 30 days. Can I still get my target band?” My answer is always the same: Yes—if you study smart.
Let’s walk through a proven four-week plan that helps busy learners build their IELTS skills quickly, systematically, and efficiently. I’ve also included a special strategy resource that has helped hundreds of test-takers excel: IELTS Uncovered: Insider Strategies for Exam Excellence.
Week 1: Set the Stage for Success
Day 1–2: Understand What You’re Up Against
Start by getting familiar with the entire IELTS format. Know the number of sections, question types, and time limits for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Spend some time exploring sample questions and instructions—this prevents confusion on test day.
Day 3–4: Take a Diagnostic Test
It’s time to put yourself to the test. Attempt a full IELTS practice test under exam conditions. Then, assess your results honestly. Which sections were the hardest? Where did you lose time?
Day 5–7: Focus on Your Weak Spots
Now that you know your strengths and weaknesses, focus your energy where it matters most. Struggling with True/False/Not Given in Reading? Spend the next few days drilling that. Having trouble organizing your Writing Task 2? Practice outlines and intros.
Pro Tip: Inside IELTS Uncovered, you’ll find section-specific strategies that help you improve exactly where it counts. It’s like a coach whispering secrets in your ear as you practice.
Week 2: Build Up Your Core Skills
This is the time to start expanding your language skills and getting used to IELTS-style questions.
Listening
-
Practice with audio samples from different accents: British, Australian, North American.
-
Work on following the speaker even when they change direction mid-sentence—a common trick in IELTS.
Reading
-
Learn how to quickly skim for the main idea and scan for specific words or numbers.
-
Practice spotting paraphrased answers—this is a huge challenge for many test-takers.
Writing
-
Understand the structure of high-scoring essays.
-
Practice timed responses. For Task 2, aim to complete your essay in 40 minutes or less.
Speaking
-
Record your answers to common Speaking Part 1, 2, and 3 questions.
-
Practice fluency by speaking for two full minutes without stopping in Part 2.
Coach Tip: Use model answers from IELTS Uncovered to compare your structure, vocabulary, and coherence.
Week 3: Practice and Perfect
At this stage, you’ve got the basics. Now you need to simulate the exam and get feedback.
Take Mock Tests
Sit for two complete IELTS practice tests this week—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking all together. Time yourself properly and treat it like the real exam.
Analyze Your Mistakes
-
Review every wrong answer and try to figure out why it was wrong.
-
Are you misreading questions? Missing synonyms? Running out of time?
Record & Evaluate Your Speaking
-
Listen to your recordings. Are you hesitating a lot? Are your answers organized?
-
Try shadow speaking—repeat after native speakers to improve rhythm and pronunciation.
Writing Feedback
-
If possible, ask an IELTS tutor or peer to evaluate your essays.
-
Alternatively, compare your answers with Band 7+ samples from IELTS Uncovered.
Week 4: Fine-Tune and Prepare to Perform
This final week is all about polishing your skills, increasing your confidence, and eliminating careless mistakes.
Review, Don’t Cram
-
Revisit grammar points that gave you trouble earlier.
-
Memorize useful linking phrases for Writing and Speaking.
-
Re-read your practice essays and notes from feedback.
One More Listening Boost
-
Listen to one podcast or news report daily.
-
Practice completing sentence or summary completion tasks while listening.
Last Two Mock Tests
Take at least two more mock exams before your real test date. By now, these should feel less intimidating and more like a routine.
