You’ve probably heard the famous sayings, “knowing is half the battle” and “showing up is half the battle.” As your IELTS coach, I’m here to tell you that when it comes to IELTS, both are 100% true! You need to know exactly what to expect, and you need to be fully prepared when you walk into that test center.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through your complete IELTS test day checklist — what to bring, what to do beforehand, and how to set yourself up for success.
My IELTS Test Day Checklist for You
This isn’t just about what to carry with you — it’s about everything you need to do to be truly ready. So if you’re asking yourself, “What should I bring on IELTS test day?” or “How do I prepare on the last day?” — download the free PDF checklist I’ve put together for you and keep reading!
What You Should Bring on IELTS Test Day
Here’s what I always tell my students to pack:
1. Valid Identification
You must bring a government-issued ID.
-
A passport is your safest bet — it’s accepted at every IELTS center worldwide.
-
In some cases, a national ID (or even a state-issued one, depending on the country) may work too.
-
Pro Tip: Call your test center ahead of time to double-check what’s acceptable!
2. Pens, Pencils, and Erasers
-
If you’re taking the paper-based IELTS, bring your own pens, pencils, and erasers. Most centers provide them too, but don’t take any chances.
-
If you’re taking the computer-delivered IELTS, don’t bring your own writing tools — the center will provide everything.
3. A Full (But Not Overfull) Stomach
-
Eat a good meal before you leave.
-
You aren’t allowed snacks during Listening, Reading, and Writing.
-
Drinks are allowed, but only in a clear plastic bottle.
Quick Tip: Don’t overeat — a bathroom break during the exam eats into your answering time!
4. Full Knowledge of Your Timetable
-
Know exactly when and where you need to be.
-
Some centers have breaks between Writing and Speaking, and some don’t, so make sure you know your schedule.
-
Knowing your timetable = fewer surprises = less stress = better focus.
5. Full Knowledge of the Route to the Test Center
-
I always recommend doing a practice trip before test day.
-
Travel all the way to the building, find the testing room.
-
This way, you avoid unnecessary stress about getting lost.
6. A Well-Rested Mind
-
Sleep properly the night before. Trust me, cramming won’t help now — a good rest will.
7. A Few Helpful Notes (Before Entering!)
-
You can’t take notes into the test, but it’s a good idea to glance over some quick, calming reminders just before you walk into the center.
8. A Strong Understanding of the Test Format
-
Make sure you’ve practiced with full-length mock exams before the big day.
-
Knowing what’s coming removes fear and boosts your confidence.
What Documents Are Required for the IELTS Exam?
When it comes to documents, the answer is simple: just your photo ID.
-
Bring your passport if you have one.
-
If not, make sure you’ve confirmed an acceptable alternative with your test center.
No other paperwork is required — keep it simple!
What is NOT Allowed on IELTS Test Day?
Here’s what you cannot bring into the test room:
-
No food.
-
No notes or books.
-
No electronic devices (phones, smartwatches, etc.).
-
No wallets.
You’ll have a place to leave your valuables safely with the test staff. Always double-check the complete list of prohibited items on the official IELTS website, too.
What to Bring for the IELTS Speaking Test
If your Speaking test is on a different day than the rest of your IELTS exam, don’t worry — your checklist remains the same:
-
Valid ID
-
A light meal beforehand
-
A well-rested, confident mind
-
A good understanding of the Speaking format (including Part 2, where you’ll make short notes!)
