In my 14 years as an IELTS coach, I’ve seen many students neglect the role of spelling in exams past and present. Some may think that only a tiny hand to some words won’t affect their score very much, but that’s not true: incorrect spelling will make you drop a level lower on your band scores.
In this post, I’ll explain why spelling is important in IELTS, how to score pet peeves, and some effective strategies for high band rankers.
Why is Spelling Important in the IELTS Test?
Spelling is a crucial factor in the IELTS exam because it affects both the Writing and Listening sections. Let me explain how:
1. IELTS Writing Task 1 & Task 2
- The IELTS Writing section evaluates your ability to express ideas clearly and accurately.
- Spelling mistakes make your writing look unprofessional and affect readability.
- If your spelling errors make a word unclear or change its meaning, you may lose marks in lexical resources and coherence.
2. IELTS Listening Section
- In the IELTS Listening test, you must write down answers correctly.
- Even if your answer is correct in meaning but spelled incorrectly, it will be marked as wrong.
- For example, if the correct answer is “accommodation” and you write “accommodation,” you will not get the mark.
3. IELTS Reading Section
- In Reading, spelling matters when you have to copy words directly from the passage.
- If you write an answer from the passage but misspell it, you may lose marks.
4. IELTS Speaking Section
- While spelling is not directly tested in Speaking, improving spelling enhances vocabulary retention, which helps in pronunciation and fluency.
How Spelling Affects Your IELTS Score
IELTS examiners assess spelling under the “Lexical Resource” criterion in Writing and indirectly in Listening and Reading.
- Band 5-6: Frequent spelling mistakes that reduce clarity.
- Band 6.5-7: Occasional spelling errors that do not affect overall meaning.
- Band 8-9: Very few to no spelling mistakes, demonstrating strong vocabulary control.
This means that reducing spelling errors can increase your Writing and Listening scores by 0.5 or even 1 band.
Common Spelling Mistakes IELTS Test Takers Make
Many students make spelling mistakes due to the following reasons:
- Silent Letters – Words like psychology, subtle, knowledge
- Double Letters – Words like accommodation, embarrass, recommend
- Commonly Confused Words – Affect vs. Effect, Their vs. There, Loose vs. Lose
- British vs. American Spelling – Colour (British) vs. Color (American), Centre (British) vs. Center (American)
- Unfamiliar Words – Complex academic vocabulary like phenomenon, questionnaire, miscellaneous
How to Improve Spelling for the IELTS Test
Here are my top strategies to master spelling for IELTS:
1. Read and Write Regularly
- Read English newspapers, magazines, and academic articles.
- Copy difficult words into a vocabulary notebook.
- Write essays and check for spelling errors.
2. Use Spelling Apps and Tools
- Use apps like Grammarly and Cambridge Dictionary to check your spelling.
- Try online spelling games to make learning fun.
3. Practice Dictation
- Listen to IELTS audio and write down what you hear.
- Check your spelling afterward.
4. Memorize Commonly Misspelled Words
- Create a list of frequently misspelled words and review them daily.
- Use mnemonics to remember difficult words.
5. Learn British Spelling Rules
- IELTS follows British English, so practice British spelling.
- For example, “analyse” (British) vs. “analyze” (American).
6. Proofread Your Writing
- Always recheck your Writing tasks before submitting them.
- Look for common spelling errors.
Final Words
The IELTS test puts major emphasis on spelling, in no small part because every mistake means a lost point. If you make one little error. An academic doorstop. As someone who teaches the IELTS test writing and thinking, I often caution students to practice spelled words seriously, to read widely, and to use proper tools designed for this purpose. Systems like this do help loosen up bad habits and errors – but they don’t eliminate them all. With the right habits and perseverance, however, spelling errors can be minimized and your IELTS score can be improved.
